I’m not sure why, but I feel most content, safe, and at home in large cities. Like many, I love the diversity of people, languages, food, music and art. Somehow, the anonymity found in cities gives me comfort as well. I’ve had the opportunity to spend time in a few very special cities — London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Boston, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Tokyo, Quito, Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In addition to the characteristics that make them special, I’m drawn to the ordinary things they share with all cities. These images are a kind of sketchbook of the “ordinary and mundane,” found within some of the places that I’ve visited and spent time. They represent my personal take on the notion of “city” — the noise, the quiet moments, the people, the buildings, the light and the shadows — and how we fit into them.
